Biesty’s Centra Raises £11,000 for Action Cancer

Biesty’s Centra store in Ballymoney has raised £11,000 for their charity partner Action Cancer.

The amazing amount was raised by store owner Glenn Biesty and his sister Carmen over a six month period in readiness for a trekking challenge for the charity along the Great Wall of China. Staff and customers at the store took part in a variety of fundraising events including a fancy dress day and barbecue for 200 people.

Unfortunately as the pair arrived in China recently to start their challenge they got the sad news that their father, who was suffering from cancer, had become very poorly, and they had to return. Sadly their father has since passed away.

In memory of their father, Glenn and Carmen are hoping to complete the challenge by Spring 2012, but in the meantime the funds they raised have gone towards Action Cancer’s life-saving health promotion programme for young people – Health Action - which is sponsored by Centra and its independent retail partners across Northern Ireland.

Action Cancer and Centra have had an award-winning partnership since 2003, to advance the local cancer charity’s health promotion service for schools and colleges and reduce cancer risk among young people. To date over 350,000 young people have taken part in the scheme.

Glenn Biesty said: “We are really pleased with our fundraising for Action Cancer and being able to give the charity £11,000 for their life-saving work is one of the most satisfying things we have ever done. Of course none of this would have been possible without the huge generosity of local people to our fundraising appeal. We’d like to thank everyone who supported it.”
