Big Breakfast success for Iris

Every year, Iris Stewart and her daughters, hold a Big Breakfast in their Knockahollet home, to raise money for Cancer Research. They take on this mammoth feat in loving memory of James Stewart, husband and hather, who sadly died after a hard fought battle with cancer, in March 2002.

A year later Iris and the girls came upon the idea through the Official Cancer Research Page and have been feeding the local population in exchange for donations every year since.

Iris and her friends and family serve up a hearty breakfast and following this year’s Big Breakfast Iris commented: “This year was great. At the moment we have raised £2,500 and I would think that could still increase .

“We have raised over £30,000 over the past 13 years which is brilliant. It’s being able to raise money like that each year that keeps me going.”

Little did Iris think that she would be going stronga decade after the first Big Breakfast in 2003,

“When I did the first one I had aboslutely no idea that 13 years later I would still be holding my Big Breakfast. Every year I think this will be the last one and the folk start to ask me ‘What date is the Big Breakfast Iris?’ and then I think sure I’ll do it one more year.

Holding an event like this in your home is no mean task but Iris manages it like a military operation.

“This year we had at least 160 people come along although there’s the chance there could be more. We just work our way through everyone and figure out after its all over home many people we have cooked for. We usually work out how many folk have been by the number of eggs we use although some people don’t like an egg with their fry. We also have some people who just come along and make a donation. It can be a long day, we cook up to 1pm and then you’ve all the clearing up to do afterwards.

“Everyone is very generous and I’m very grateful for their support. Its such a worthy cause it makes it all worth while.”
