The money was raised through a variety of collections and events including a ‘Big Breakfast’ held in February, as well as receiving donations from local supporters including schools, funeral directors and local people who were keen to support the work of Cancer Research UK.

Senior Local Fundraising Manager for CRUK, Mark McMahon, was also in attendance and commented, “On behalf of Cancer Research UK, I would like to sincerely thank the members of the Ballymena Local Committee for their continued hard work and dedication to raising funds to help in the fight against cancer. Many of the members have been volunteering tirelessly for years and their commitment remains undimmed in this time, despite the difficulties faced when fundraising in the current economic climate. I would also like to thank the people of Ballymena for their support of the Committee and CRUK in general; we could not do the work we do without their fantastic contribution.”

Mark continued: “It is very important that we continue to work hard to fund the work of our scientists and nurses to help in the fight against cancer. Every hour, someone in Northern Ireland is diagnosed with the disease. More than one in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetime. But there is good news. Research funded by Cancer Research UK is helping more people to survive than ever before.”

Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding, so they rely on the generosity of the public to fund their live-saving work across the UK. This includes CRUK’s annual investment of £2m in cancer research in Northern Ireland for the last few years, including research done at the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology (CCRCB) in Belfast. The CCRCB is recognised as a world-class centre of excellence for cancer research. The charity is also funding clinical trials in hospitals across Northern Ireland and which are vital in order to test new ways of treating and controlling cancer.

If you are interested in finding out more about the work of the charity, ‘An Evening With Cancer Research UK’ is an event that is being held at The Old School, Gracehill, Ballymena on Thursday 26th May from 7pm.
