“We will also have Paula McIntyre, local celebrity chef, doing a cooking demonstration with local produce including produce grown by a number of local primary schools.”

The Big Forest Day is part of the Big Lunch initiative which is about getting as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours in June in a simple act of community, friendship and fun.

Garvagh has already had a Big Lunch in 2014 and and a Big Dance in 2015 and the initiative is now being taken into the Forest.

Karin Eyben, from Corrymeela, another of the organisers, says: “We thought this time that we should celebrate Garvagh Forest and what it has given and provided to people today and over hundreds of years.

“We also want the day to be one where people can give their views on the plans being developed for the neighbouring former Garvagh High School site by Garvagh Enterprise Trust.”

The event is being funded by the Big Lottery and supported by Garvagh Enterprise Trust.

There will be parking at St Paul’s Church of Ireland car park as well as the town car park at Bridge Street.
