Big Lottery funds local groups

FOUR local groups have been awarded grants totalling £16,354 which will enable them to carry out energy saving improvements.

This is all thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s Energy Efficient Venues programme, as part of a grants roll-out of £621,286 to 62 groups across Northern Ireland.

Frank Hewitt, the Big Lottery Fund’s NI Chair said: “The Energy Efficient Venues programme supports community organisations to carry out energy efficiency improvements to their venues that help them make savings during this difficult period of recession, and have a positive effect on the environment.

“The programme is open for applications, but organisations should be aware that it closes at 12noon on Friday 1 June 2012.”

The Royal British Legion, Donaghcloney, who received £2,208 will use the grant to install a Phase voltage optimisation system, a device that reduces and manages the voltage coming into the building, ensuring electrical appliances use less electricity and cost less to run.

The Bleary Cultural Society will use the grant they received of £3,778 to install 11 new double glazed windows and a new door in their community venue. They will also carry out an energy audit to find out where energy is being wasted and identify improvements they need to make in the future

The Dollingstown Ulster Scots Cultural and Heritage Society received £2,138.

The group will use the grant to install cavity wall and loft insulation in their community venue.

A draught proof door and flame retardant curtains and blinds will also be used to reduce heat loss from the building.

The Shankill (Lurgan) Community Projects group who received £8,230 will use the grant to replace five windows and frames on the ground floor of the venue with double glazed uPVC. A zoned boiler system will also be installed in the conference room and an energy audit will also be carried out to find out where they are wasting energy and identify the improvements they may need to make in the future.
