Despite the wet weather, more than 50 people gathered for a picnic in the grounds of the seaside town’s Methodist Church.

Organised by the Whitehead Wombles, the programme included a diversity workshop hosted by Maria Jones and Ulster Champion Irish dancers, Eve Black and Crica Steele performing their winning dance on stage.

Noel McKee. of Whitehead Wombles, said: “We are delighted to be involved in The Big Lunch again this year to celebrate UK Neighbourhood day altogether. There are only 5,000 people in our town so we wanted to feel part of something bigger.

“Our ethos was to keep it simple and just take time to sit down for one day and chat with our neighbours.

“It’s amazing how simply having a good conversation with your neighbour makes you feel part of your community and a greater belonging to your area.”

Younger participants also enjoyed entertainment from Buddy the clown, face painting and inflatables.

They joined an estimated four million people across the whole of the UK supporting The Big Lunch, which is funded by the Big Lottery Fund and led by the Eden Project.

It encourages people to have lunch with their neighbours once a year, for a few hours of community, friendship and fun.

There’s still chance to take part as you can organise a Big Lunch on a date to suit your community. Free packs including posters, invitations, an inspiration booklet and other resources to help organise your event are available from www.thebiglunch.com until the end of this month.
