Big rise in Ballymena’s long-term young jobless - Prince’s Trust

THE number of young people in Ballymena who are long-term unemployed has increased dramatically since the start of the recession, a new paper by youth charity The Prince’s Trust has revealed.

The research shows how the number of young people claiming Job Seekers Allowance for six months or more in Ballymena has risen by 262.5% in the last four years.

The figures were taken from Claimant Count by age and duration, Labour Market Statistics, Office for National Statistics and the number of under 24-year-olds claiming Job Seekers Allowance in Ballymena for more than six months from August 2008 was compared with those from August 2012. The figure for 2008 was 40 while the figure for August 2012 is 145.

Last year The Prince’s Trust supported over 3,000 disadvantaged young people throughout Northern Ireland and over 78% of those who completed their programmes progressed into education, training and employment.
