The pop group’s management announced at 1.30pm today, Thursday, that due to illness on the part of Jessie Nelson both shows were being pulled. They are to be re-scheduled in a fortnight. Fans were already in Belfast when the cancellation was confirmed and fans asked to hold on to their tickets.

Among them was little Abbie Killen, the seven-year-old daughter of Claire Killen from Londonderry. Their £38 tickets were a Christmas present from Wendy Elizabeth Thompson, Abbie’s aunt.

“Claire and I took a day off work to take Abbie to Belfast for the concert,” said Wendy. “It was announced at 1.30pm that the show was cancelled. The show was due to start at 2pm. Claire’s daughter is a big LM fan and was really looking forward to it, she was so excited.”

Claire Killen said her daughter had been signing to an LM song on the radio in the car on the way to Belfast.

“We went on Twitter posting pictures of ourselves because the band had asked fans attending the concert to Tweet them,” she said. “That was at 10am or 11am this morning, so they must have known Jessie was ill at that stage.

“We are very disappointed. We know of one little girl from Glasgow, whose parents got her up early and told her she was going to the concert and got flights and everything arranged. They have wasted flights and hotels and everything and said they could not take time off again. You feel really bad for them,” she said.

“What really annoys me is the who ‘last minute’ announcement and, lets face it, if there were five people in an office and one of them is sick you don’t shut the office. The work still gets done. It is easier to explain to children and someone is missing because they are ill than try and explain they are not getting to see the concert at all.”

Disappointed grandmother Christine Doherty, said: “We are very gutted. My granddaughter, who is 13, has been waiting from Christmas to see them, as this was part of her present. She was all excited last week and said she couldn’t wait. “Children has been left in tears again. Its not good enough. Why is there no ‘plan b’ put in operation after One Direction?

“Questions needed to be asked. Luckily for my son and his wife they couldn’t get booked into a hotel. Thank God for that, as they would have lost it. I have spoken to them on the phone and she’s so upset. At 13 you can just imaging how she’s feeling.”
