Biking birder to visit Lough Foyle

A 'WHEELIE' dedicated birder from England is to visit Lough Foyle in the coming weeks as he pedals his way on a year-long journey around every one of the RSPB's nature reserves in Britain.

Gary Prescott, a special needs teacher, set off on his bike from RSPB Sandwell Valley in Birmingham, on New Year's Day and will reach Ballykelly on June 8.

Gary said: "From a simple desire to do more birdwatching, I am now raising money for the RSPB and other charities and also trying to educate people on the very real threat climate change poses by using cycling as a means of travel."

He continued: "It's a truly life changing experience! I love meeting so many interesting people and experiencing such amazing wildlife along the way. It is my first time in Northern Ireland and I can't wait to see what it has in store for me."

And what a treat is in store for Gary. He can expect to see breeding common terns in Belfast Harbour, lapwing in Portmore, curlews in Lough Erne and puffins on Rathlin Island.

Stephanie Sim, RSPB, said: "Northern Ireland's wildlife is simply amazing, and Gary will see some of our best sights.

"Gary's dedication is tremendous and wholly admirable. Climate change is one of the biggest issues facing us today.

"We hope that his efforts will inspire others to do something for wildlife and the environment. Signing the RSPB's Letter to the Future is a good start. You can go to www.rspb.org.uk/letter to do this."
