Bill cracks open egg-traordinary mystery

larne man Bill Longmore got more than he bargained for at the weekend when he cracked open an egg for breakfast.

He had planned to enjoy a delicious poached egg when he made the unusual discovery of an egg inside an egg.

“Imagine my surprise when out came the normal egg yolk and white and then another egg - all from the one shell.

“I have never heard of this happening before,” said Bill.

He has kept his bizarre find in the fridge in the hope that someone will be able to shed some light on the mystery. Or indeed, that an egg expert might want to take a closer look at the phenomenon.According to the internet, it appears that it is rare for an egg within an egg - as opposed to a double-yoked egg - to find its way to a customer.

And it appears there are several theories for the origin of double eggs.

One expert says that the most likely suggests that the normal rhythmic muscular action, or peristalsis, that moves a developing egg down the oviduct in a hen malfunctions in some way.

Whatever the scientific reason, Bill is justifiably mystified by his discovery.
