Bins headache for Macosquin couple

A couple from Macosquin were forced to burn domestic rubbish because their bins had not been emptied since before Christmas.

Mrs Kathleen Kealey from Killeague Road was one of many householders whose bins were crammed full with Christmas refuse.

However the bins collection service, operated by Coleraine Borough Council, was unable to reach some parts of borough due to treacherous road conditions.

Mrs Kealey said: “We have not had our bins empted since before Christmas. It’s a disgrace.

“Last week my husband waved the bin lorry down but it would not stop because our road is too slippy. It has affected other people along the road too.

“I have rang the Council and they have said to live the bin out and the lorry will get to us some time, maybe this week.”

Mrs Kealey added: “We had so much rubbish that my husband had to take some of it out to burn it. We had no other option.

“It’s a ridiculous situation.”

Last week SDLP MLA John Dallat highlighted how icy and snow-bound local roads had “played havoc” with bin collections.

A Council spokesperson told the Times: “Refuse collection for blue and black bins continue to be disrupted this week due to the severe weather conditions.

“Members of the public are requested , if possible, to leave both bins outside their homes until they are collected.”

A spokesperson for the Council's Technical Services Department explained that they are still experiencing problems in a number of areas across the Council area and that all efforts are being made to meet these extra arrangements and to continue with existing service delivery.
