Biomass and landfill gas applications

TWO applications have been lodged for separate waste management plants in Londonderry.

The applications are for plants on either side of the River Foyle.

One is for a 15MW biomass heat and power plant to be fuelled by virgin wood on a site between the Temple Road and the Maydown Road in Lisahally.

The second is for the installation of a landfill gas management system with gas-flaring equipment and electricity generating equipment at the Culmore Landfill Site on the Coney Road near the border with Donegal.

The rationale for such landfill gas management systems is to convert environmentally harmful methane to less harmful CO2 by burning it.

Systems can also be employed to generate electricity from the gas and therefore both displace the use of fossil fuels use and minimise emissions to the atmosphere.

Both applications have been lodged with the local Planning Office.
