'Birthday gift car' wasn't insured

A MAN was driving a car just bought to him as a birthday present when he was involved in a smash, a court has heard.

A solicitor for Eugene Brendan Duffin (21) of Clady Road, Cushendun pleaded guilty on behalf of his client to no insurance at North Antrim Magistrates Court on Friday.

The court heard police were called to a road traffic collision on the Tromra Road Cushendall on July 29.

The defendant’s car had been in a collision with another vehicle.

Police subsequently discovered Duffin was not insured to drive the vehicle.

A defence solicitor told the court Duffin’s father had bought him the car for his birthday and he had been driving it home when the crash occurred.

The solicitor said Duffin had been insured at the time to drive his father’s car.

District Judge Richard Wilson said: “He’s going to have to be more careful in the future.”

He fined Duffin 200 and gave him six penalty points.
