Bizzare range of items are seized at Magilligan jail

WARDENS seized a bag of excrement, a woolly hat, pornographic videos, a loyalist CD and a republican hankie from prisoners in Magilligan amongst varied confiscations at the jail between 2008 and 2009.

Other items seized included drugs, booze, weapons and potential weapons. Ingenious inmates in the prison managed to turn apples and soft drinks cans into cannabis smoking devices and to conceal gallon-sized containers of prison hooch in their cells.

Information obtained through Freedom of Information (FOI) legislation showed 15 units of alcohol, 89 drugs/tablets, 22 drugs related items, 36 improvised smoking devices, 30 unknown substances/liquids, eight unauthorised items of medication, two bottles of furniture polish and two bottles of glue were seized between January 2008 and August 2009.

Amongst the smoking devices were an "apple that has been doctored into a smoking device ('bong'). One hole for inhalation, hole on the top with metal foil placed over with the minutes holes, punched into it to burn a substance."

A milk carton lid and soft drinks tins used as bongs and several syringes and needles were also seized.

Two pornographic DVDs and a Stanley Knife blade were also found.

Four items classed as cigarettes/tobacco/lighter and three lighters were also confiscated over the nineteen month period.

Weapons and potential weapons seized in the prison included thirteen blades/knives, six small metal bars, one large metal bar and four screwdrivers.

A range of electrical, entertainment and communications equipment was also seized in the jail including a CD, fourteen electrical wires/batteries, 11 games consoles/accessories, 117 mobile phones/chargers, nine radios/stereos, 18 SIM cards and 12 televisions or Digiboxes.

Amongst the diverse haul were also a quantity of cash, two home made tools, 13 improvised devices, two lighters, two mirrors, six items of excess bedding, three newspapers/magazines, an item of clothing, a woolly hat, a bag of excrement.
