Blaney hits out over estate's roads issue

THE completion of road surfacing at the Leyland Farm estate in Ballycastle has been warmly welcomed by Independent Councillor, Seamus Blaney, (pictured) who has been campaigning for the work to be carried out for sometime.

The Independent representative said it had been a long wait and that he had been lobbying the Roads Service as well as raising the issue at council level for several years.

“Some residents have had to walk out with their bins to the main road for far too long, but the wait is now over and we can be thankful for that,” Cllr. Blaney said.

However, he hit out at his council colleague, Paudie McShane, claiming that the former Sinn Fein man was “jumping on the bandwagon” by issuing a statement claiming the credit for championing the issue.

“I’m not trying to points score, but I was the one who was right at the heart of this issue and I don’t understand why Cllr. McShane is trying to claim much of the credit,” Cllr. Blaney said.

Cllr. McShane said in a statement last week that the matter had become a serious safety issue given that cars were exchanging sides of the road to avoid obstacles such as manholes and drainage grates.

He said the issue needed to be addressed and that he was pleased this had finally been realised.

Residents had endured the incomplete roads for a number of years in Leyland Farm. I am aware of similar cases in Moyle and I will also be highlighting them to Road Service,” said Councillor McShane.
