Blast bomb attack

YOUTHS have been blamed for an attempted blast bomb attack on Craigavon police station.

Eye witnesses said two youths threw a device at the station just before 11pm on Monday night.

Locals have said there was a loud bang followed by a lot of smoke.

It's been claimed two fireworks taped together were found close to the perimeter wall of the station.

Sources have said teenagers in the area, calling themselves 'Mini CIRA', are behind the so-called attack.

The police said they are investigating the incident and have reported no injuries or damage.

Councillor for the area and Deputy Mayor, Kieran Corr, urged young people to consider their actions.

He said: "These people are no asset to the area, nobody wants this and we have moved on, but there is a minority who are trying to live in the past.

"Those involved need to think about what they are doing and consider their own future and if they want it to be behind bars."

The SDLP's Dolores Kelly has condemned the attack, she said: "I was contacted at 11pm by nearby residents.

"They are obviously very anxious, especially with the memories of how the '93 bomb devastated the area.

"This device was obviously powerful enough to injure or even kill someone.

"There has been a lack of information about what has happened from the police and Michael McGolderick as head of the DPP will talk with police about this and we would urge anyone who may have information to contact the PSNI if they know anything."

Craigavon DPP and CSP member Mairead O’Dowd called on those responsible for throwing the two large fireworks to desist from their activities.

Councillor O'Dowd said: "There is no rational to this type of behaviour which serves no purpose other than to disrupt the lives of those who live within this community.

"The only consequence of this childish action was to cause distress and worry amongst residents especially, those young people who were making their way home as the fireworks went off.”
