Blooming Londonderry to flourish at awards

MAYOR Alderman Maurice Devenney has welcomed city’s win in the Small City Category in the coveted Ulster in Bloom awards.

Speaking following the announcement the Mayor said the city would represent Northern Ireland in the Small City category of the Britain in Bloom awards.

SDLP councillor Shaun Gallagher, the Chairman of Environmental Services Committee attended the event in Co. Antrim along with Council grounds maintenance staff member, Adrian McGonagle.

Extending his congratulations to everyone involved in the city’s winning entry, the Mayor said a lot of hard work had gone into making the city colourful and welcoming.

“The city is looking spectacular, everyone has pulled out the stops to make it look well. A special note of congratulations must be extended to Council’s grounds maintenance staff for their efforts in additional floral displays across the city.

“It’s a privilege for us to represent Northern Ireland in the overall Britain in Bloom awards and I am confident we have a good chance of securing another coveted award,” he said.

Danny McCartney, Grounds Maintenance and Cemeteries Manager for Derry City Council said it was a great honour to receive the award on behalf of the Council and the Pride in our City Campaign.

“A lot of hard work and effort has gone into this year’s campaign and we have made considerable progress in improving on how the city is presented. Our floral displays across the city have been really well received and the feedback we have been getting from the public has been very positive.

“The award is recognition of the work carried out by everyone involved, in particular our own Grounds Maintenance staff,” he said.
