Blooming marvellous!

COLERAINE is looking green and glorious this summer, as the town prepares to compete in the RHS Britain in Bloom Competition.

And this year, Coleraine enlisted a very famous resident to help with the planting.

Local actress, Jayne Wisener stepped in to plant some summer flowers to endorse Coleraine’s entry.

The star of the big screen was only too delighted to lend support to her home town.

Of course Coleraine secured a place in the finals following its success in last year’s awards.

Even being invited to compete in the prestigious contest is an honour, but the Coleraine in Colour Committee have their sights firmly set on ‘going for gold’.

Acting Manager at Parks Nursery, Paul Jess, said; “We have been planning for our entry for over a year now and despite the setback of the cold weather and the subzero temperatures over the winter, we are right on course to introduce the colourful summer bedding and floral displays to the town and throughout the Borough.

“The Borough has a longstanding high record for its public gardens, beddings and displays, and every year the team at Parks Nursery ensures that the town is blooming beautiful throughout the summer months for the public and visitors to enjoy.”

Paul continued; “We are encouraging community groups and voluntary groups to get behind the campaign, and we have already been in discussions with some of the local groups to see how we can help them develop potential for community based clean ups or planting projects.

“We would also like to encourage our green fingered residents to keep up the good work with their home gardens, even the people who don’t have a huge amount of space can fill window boxes and hanging baskets that could really catch the eye and fill the senses.”

Mayor of Coleraine, Clllr Sandy Gilkinson, added; "We are incredibly proud to be entered into this year's Britain in Bloom competition.

“Coleraine was last nominated in 2008, and since then Council has sustained and enhanced its floral contribution both in Coleraine and throughout the Borough.

“Every year Council works hard towards making the Borough a brighter and more colourful place and I am very pleased when we get recognition for it.”
