Blow for manufacturing sector in North Antrim - McKay

Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has said news that the Michelin factory in Ballymena is to close by 2018 is devastating for the local area.

Mr McKay said the news the factory is being run down is “devastating”.

“This is yet another blow to the manufacturing sector in North Antrim,” he said.

He added: “More than 800 workers and their families have been left in shock at this news just weeks before Christmas.

“The company needs to work closely with workers in the weeks and months ahead as they and their families face enormous challenges.”

He also called for the Enterprise Minister to set out what his department’s plan of action is to ensure workers are offered retraining or upskilling to enable them to find further employment.

“I have tabled an urgent question to the Enterprise Minister asking him what he plans to do in conjunction with Executive colleagues to support these workers in the time ahead,” Mr McKay added.
