Blues turned on the style

GLENAVON turned on the style against Linfield in March 1970.

The Blues put in a sparkling performance to send the reigning league champions back to Belfast with their tails between their legs.

Linfield were humiliated 5-2 and their manager, Ewan Fenton, commented afterwards that he had never seen his side play so badly.

The Mourneview Park men were in charge from start to finish, taking the lead in the first minute through Albert Macklin. Their lead was soon extended in the 15th minute when man of the match Jackie Fullerton’s shot was deflected past a helpless Sammy Stewart in the Linfield goal.

Dennis Guy added a third on the half-hour mark to give Glenavon a commanding half-time lead.

Any worries Glenavon fans may have had about a Linfield fightback were dispelled in the 57th minute when Jackie Fullerton dribbled through three defenders to blast home a fourth goal.

Glenavon then created - and wasted - chance after chance, with Sammy Stewart doing his best to avoid total humiliation. Linfield clawed a goal back in the 65th minute and then another in the 88th.

A score of 4-2 flattered Linfield however and, in stoppage time Albert Macklin scored again to complete the rout, Glenavon’s best performance of the season.
