Board moves should not mean exclusion - Storey

THE DUP Chairman of the Assembly Education Committee, North Antrim MLA Mervyn Storey, says that plans to replace Northern Ireland's Education and Library Boards should not be used as an excuse for excluding key stake-holders in the education system.

Mr. Storey warned against any attempt to exclude representatives from faith groups from serving on boards of governors and education authorities as part of future education structures.

The DUP MLA said: “As the process of convergence continues, it is important that it is not used as excuse to exclude representatives from certain faith groups, who have shown commitment and dedication down through the years, from serving as governors of schools or in the new structures that will replace the education and library boards. “I have consistently defended the rights of people from faith groups to make an input into the education system,” he said.

“It is important also that in any new arrangements the interests of the controlled sector are protected. This applies not only to controlled grammar schools, but also the controlled secondary education sector.”.
