Boathouse 'integral' to riverside plans

A BOATHOUSE on the River Foyle may see a major redevelopment as part of plans to maximise the leisure potential of the city.

A Derry City Council spokeswoman said Prehen Boathouse - dormant for over ten years - will be integral to its riverside strategy.

Two local sporting organisations use the facility. These are the City of Derry Rowing Club and the Foyle Paddlers Canoe Club.

Both groups will be consulted over the potential moves. She stated: "The Council has been working closely with the Foyle Paddlers and the City of Derry Rowing Club regarding their short and long-term objectives for providing water based activities for young people at Prehen.

“Prehen Boathouse will play an integral part in the development of the Council's proposed riverside strategy.”

Council reassumed ownership of the building in 2008 from the North West Regional College (NWRC).
