Bogus caller danger

MANY people are too trusting and every week there is a new incident involving bogus callers, tricking their way into people's homes.

These tricksters will normally target the elderly and vulnerable. They have no qualms about robbing pensioners on low incomes or of stealing personal keep sakes. Unfortunately the days of leaving your key in the door while you nip out to the shop are long gone. Care and vigilance are required.

Housing Executive District Manager is warning residents, to think twice before allowing strangers into their home.

"Please ask for identification, and if still in doubt refuse entry and ring the District Office immediately. A genuine caller will not object to a householder being cautious.

Tenants should be extra vigilant as bogus callers are on the increase and theft is usually their aim. These bogus callers will frequently claim to be from a public body such as the Housing Executive. Residents should be particularly careful before allowing anyone to enter their home without checking for proper identification."

The Housing Executive offers the following key advice to tenants: Housing Executive staff and those from other public bodies will have an Identity Card.

If they have forgotten their Card they will understand if entry is refused.

If you are in any doubt at all, take no chances, and refuse entry.

Only a bogus caller will insist on entry without proper identification so: If you have a door chain - use it and if you are still suspicious call the police.
