Bogus caller strikes and threatens man with gun

Councillor Yvonne Craig has expressed her concern that an armed bogus caller threatened a man at Hillview Avenue last Friday.

The caller claimed to be from an electric company before pulling a gun out and pointing it at the occupant’s head then demanded money.

The suspect was joined at the door by a second man, however, the occupant was able to escape from the rear of the property and raise the alarm.

The suspects and a third man who is believed to have remained in a vehicle then fled the scene in a silver Chrysler people carrier which was later reported on fire in Priory Close at around 8pm.

Mrs Craig urged the occupant to contact her or any other members of the Policing Board to help have his house assessed by the police and security measures installed at his home.

She urged householders to check all credential of callers and if possible ring the company they are claiming to be from while they wait outside.

“Should the caller even have to hold up their credentials at the window then let them do so,” she said. “Do not let them in until you are sure.

“Most people call to your door for a genuine reason. It is not often this type of crime happens. If they are genuine they will not mind waiting outside.

“I can’t even imagine how awful an ordeal this must have been for the man. If this man wants to contact me to ensure he gets a lock fitted to his door and have his house assessed then he can do so. A policeman will come out and check over his house.

“This incident is very concerning. These are not people who have acted on impulse. They were looking for money and prepared to do what they can to get it. There is no excuse for this type of behaviour.”

A black car was reported as leaving Priory Close at speed a short time later.
