Bomb attack claimed

A group calling itself Óglaigh na hÉireann has claimed responsibilty for Tuesday mornings car bomb attack at Strand Road police station.

In a statement admitted that it had attempted to bomb the barracks on the previous day. It claimed the bomb attack had not gone ahead after two taxi drivers "refused to co-operate with instructions."

The 200lb bomb caused serious damage to the surrounding area but no one was injured in the attack.

Police say the roads around the station were likely to remain closed again today.

The cordon point at Strand Road/Clarendon Street has been shifted to the Strand Road/Asylum Road junction.

Boating Club Lane has now been reopened up to the junction of Strand Road.

The other point at Strand Road/Lawrence Hill remains in place.
