'Bomb could have killed', says Cubitt

A LIMAVADY Councillor says a fatality could have occurred after a pipe bomb exploded in the Anderson Crescent area of the town last week.

UUC Councillor Leslie Cubitt thoroughly condemned the explosion, which happened at around 10.00pm on Wednesday night in the residential area. Councillor Cubitt says the explosion could have claimed the life of an adult or even a child, and called on magistrates to give heavier sentencing to those convicted of such offences.

He said: "I sympathise deeply with the residents in this area who had to go through this ordeal through no fault of their own. Someone could have easily lost their life and I hope those responsible are apprehended and dealt with heavily by the judicial system."

Councillor Cubitt added: "This area is heavily populated with children who could have been playing where this pipe bomb exploded. Even worse a child could have picked it up. I would remind all parents to speak with their children about avoiding suspicious objects."

"I hope that when these people face a magistrate they are given the sentencing and punishment they deserve."

Last week Chief Inspector Steven Carrigan said police were "open-minded" about who was behind the attack labelling it a "reckless attack on the community". A PSNI spokeswoman said investigations were ongoing and a motive is still under investigation. Police are appealing for anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area is to contact Limavady CID.
