Booklet launched to celebrate ‘new town’

Brownlow will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year and plans are already afoot to mark this momentous occasion.

PLACE in association with Craigavon Borough Council and community representatives in Brownlow has produced a publication which captures the development of Brownlow from the early years to present times using a mixture of personal histories, mapping workshops and photography. The publication entitled “Craigavon New Town” covers the highs and lows of the development of Central Craigavon and also captures some of the humorous episodes which residents experienced living and raising families in Brownlow.

Chair of the Development Committee, Councillor Mark Baxter commented. “I would like to congratulate PLACE for producing such a high quality document which highlights the development of Central Craigavon in a unique and striking way. I know this has sown the seeds for further projects and I look forward to hearing more about future developments.”

The Brownlow area will also feature in an exhibition ‘Craigavon New Town: Fifty years of Modernity’ which launches in the Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast this week. The show features new and archival photography by Craigavon based artist, Victor Sloan alongside historical materials documenting the founding of Craigavon. The exhibition is part of Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014 a series of events and exhibitions developed by PLACE with the support of the British Council and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. The exhibition will run from 24th October to 1st November.

The publication was funded by Peace III Southern Partnership “Investing in our Future” and was produced by PLACE, an independent, not for profit organisation dedicated to the making and documenting of great places across Northern Ireland and was supported by Council’s Arts Development and Community Development Teams.
