Moyraverty 50+ Group received £7,095 to give people in the area the chance to take part in a series of social and recreational activities, such as tea dances, walking excursions and educational visits.

Chairperson Maureen Hilley said: “I found out at Christmas, so it was a very happy Christmas for the club.

“We set up the group in May at the request of local people in the area who said there wasn’t much to do for over 50s.”

The 50+ club has 50+ members, the oldest of whom is a 90-year-old lady.

Elsewhere Lurgan YMCA got £9,275 which will be used by the group to run an inner-city outdoor adventure programme for young people.

Hugo Dale, Lurgan YMCA Chief Executive, said: “It’s great news for us. The money will be use to buy more canoes and kayaks so we can extend our outdoors programme, allowing people to get into the water in Lurgan Park and other parts of the borough.

“We’re trying to give people the opportunity to try healthy, outdoor activities without having to drive the length of the country.”

The grant will also go towards a coach development programme to train coaches of the future.
