Boost for Portstewart as MUGA and new cafe are approved

Causeway Coast and Glens District councillors have granted planning permission to an application to develop a disused toilet block at the rear of Strand Road, Portstewart into a tourist cafe or outlet.

The planning committee agreed with the planners recommendation for approval, despite objections from several local residents about the potential noise, litter and odour issues surrounding the development. Permission was granted with restrictions put on opening hours of the proposed facility to ensure minimum disruption to residents.

At the same meeting, permission was granted for the construction of a new MUGA (Multi use Games Area) at Juniper Hill Caravan Park, Portstewart.

The MUGA will consist of a secure playing area with an all-weather surface and is typical of the secure playing areas being constructed by council with secure high fencing surrounding the play area. Cllr John Finlay raised concerns about whether or not the caravan owners had been notified about this development. Planning officer Shane Mathers said that no objections had been received.
