‘Boris’ joins Sunshine on Leith cast

Generations of patients and visitors to Belfast Children’s Hospital have long loved and tended Boris, a spider plant which is a fixture in A&E, and has become known for his costumes as he celebrates St Patrick’s Day, Valentines Day and Christmas.

However this time, rather than confine himself to the odd heart-shaped decoration, he is taking the unprecedented step of treading boards, when he features as a key part of the set in Fusion Theatre’s production of Sunshine on Leith in Lisburn’s Island Hall from September 9-12.

The show tells the story of relationships when two soldiers return from Afghanistan to their hometown of Edinburgh, and is a rollicking modern musical featuring the music of the infamous red-haired, bespectacled twins known as ‘The Proclaimers’.

No wedding party is complete without the entire wedding party marching and singing along to ‘I would walk 500 miles’.

While its a fun, exuberant piece, the light is balanced with shade which includes several scenes in a hospital, and that’s where Boris gets his chance to shine.

The hospital scenes are likely to be stolen by Boris, who is the most realistic piece of ward furniture that the set designers could have hoped to find Director Ian Milford says that he has been “blown away” by Boris’ authenticity, and ability to “own the role”. As he said: “Boris has really nailed that part.”

In the past Boris has met Starship troopers from Star Wars and TV cartoon characters, as well as celebrities such as Jackie Fullerton and Rory McIlroy, along with the generations of patients, but this really is something new.
