Borough gets ready to sparkle with the big Christmas switch-on

RESIDENTS and visitors to the borough can get into the festive spirit with bell ringers and carol singers at the Christmas lights big switch-on events starting in Coleraine on Friday, November 30.

This event marks the official countdown to Christmas in the Coleraine borough, is expected to attract thousands of people. Everyone can look forward to an evening of festive fun and frolics.

Eighty local school children promise to wow on lookers with their wonderful ‘A Touch of Magic’ street parade, as they lead Santa’s sleigh into town centre.

Christmas tunes and games will entertain the crowds from 6pm before Santa and the Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor Sam Cole arrive by Clydesdale horse and wagon and take to the stage to lead the countdown to the big switch-on at 7pm.

An exciting selection of entertainers including, walkabout characters, street theatre and a live performance from a Katy Perry/Jessie J tribute act will ensure a fun-filled evening for all.

Children of primary school age or younger will be invited to visit Santa in his grotto to receive a special free gift.

Speaking ahead of the switch-on events, Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor Sam Cole said; “Christmas is a very special time of year and the switching on of Christmas lights is a magical family event that brings a huge amount of excitement and joy to our local towns and villages. It marks the official beginning of the festive season in the Borough of Coleraine”.

“There will be plenty of fun, games and entertainment for all the family, before Santa and I arrive at each location. I would advise you all to get there early to soak up the magnificent atmosphere.”

Santa and Mayor Cole will be travelling to towns and villages throughout the Borough in the upcoming days and weeks to switch on the Christmas lights.

Approaching switch-on dates are as follows; Coleraine, Fri 30th November at 7pm, Portrush, Sat 1st December at 6.00pm; Garvagh, Mon 3rd December at 7.30pm, Portstewart, Fri 7th December at 7.30pm, Kilrea, Saturday 8th December at 5pm, Portballintrae, Saturday 8th December at 4pm and Castlerock, Thursday 13th December at 6.50pm.
