Borough’s recycling rates keep increasing

Newtownabbey was one of only three council areas in Northern Ireland to increase its recycling levels last year, local councillors have been told.

During last Monday night’s Environment Committee meeting, members were informed that recycling rates in the borough have now passed 50 per cent and that the council is hoping to make it 60 per cent by 2020.

Elected representatives congratulated officers and staff on their efforts.

Sinn Fein Cllr Gerry O’Reilly claimed that the borough’s increasing recycling levels only strengthen the argument against arc21’s plan to build a waste incinerator at Hightown Quarry.
