Bowling fraternity are saddened by sudden death

THE local bowling fraternity has been left shocked and saddened by the sudden death of a well-known and popular figure in the local sport.

Andrew Kirk had been bowling on a club night at Lagan Valley, but he collapsed afterwards and died just after an ambulance arrived.

The immediate thoughts of all local bowlers must turn to the family circle left behind by Andrew, especially his wife, Donna, and two sons, Brett, who also played at Lagan Valley, and Ross. Deepest sympathy goes out to them at this sad time.

His popularity among bowlers was very recognisable at the funeral service in St John’s Parish, Moira on Monday - the church was packed to capacity for the service.

Drew, as he was known among the bowlers, was a past-president of Lagan Valley, a keen bowler and a tireless worker for the club, organising Tuesday fun nights and also club tournaments on Thursday nights.

He also bowled short mat at Royal British Legion and his home church, St John’s Moira. He has taken a rink to the Jethro Rinks League for several years. His success there may have been limited, but the enjoyment was clear to see.

Perhaps, a story just before his death illustrates the type of person Drew really was. A bowler from Lurgan asked to join Lagan Valley, but he had no transport. Drew solved the situation by offering to pick him up in Lurgan each Saturday.

The Lagan Valley League match away to Curran B last Saturday was postponed as a mark of respect.
