Boxer Wayne McCullough in Limavady visit

SPORTS stars from around the world will be in Limavady on Tuesday, June 26 to share their experiences in sport at the Sport for Peace Building Conference. The free event at the Roe Valley Resort, Limavady will be hosted by former UTV presenter Claire McCollum.

This initiative is part of the North East PEACE III Partnership, Sport for Peace Building Project, which aims to promote good relations and integration through sport. The Project is funded under the European Union’s PEACE III Programme and is managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the North East PEACE III Partnership.

The speakers are drawn from a wide variety of sporting backgrounds and include Wayne McCullough, Olympic Boxing Silver Medallist, Nigel Carr, Deputy Chairman of the Ulster Sports Museum, Professor John Sugden, Director of Football for Peace and University of Ulster Lecturers, Dr David Hassan and Paul Kitchin.

This aim of the conference is to bring together a mix of internationally recognised sports athletes, coaches, participants, researchers and policy makers, to discuss the different perspectives and approaches to sport and peace building from a local and international perspective.

The conference will draw on research, professional practice and personal experience to examine the value of sport as a vehicle for promoting peace to highlight learning for the future. It is aimed at sports development practitioners; local community activists and representatives from marginalized and ethnic minority groups; as well as those involved in funding and managing community sports initiatives targeted at inter-culturalism, inclusion and peace building.
