'Boys' welcome new dawn

THE Apprentice Boys of Derry have said the new deal struck by the DUP and Sinn Fein could herald a new dawn for parading in Northern Ireland.A statement from the organisation has said it will adopt a positive attitude towards the new proposals on parades.

A spokesman for the Loyal Order said: "The Apprentice Boys of Derry welcome the new improved proposals on parading.

"The prize of an agreed regulatory and adjudication system is one which all sections of the Northern Ireland community should welcome. We are heartened that our experience in Londonderry was of some assistance to those who worked for this outcome, and trust that parading will now be seen as a cultural rather than a public order issue.

"As ever, our approach will be constructive and supportive. The Apprentice Boys of Derry look forward to what promises to be a new beginning to parading in Northern Ireland."

Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Ken Good has also welcomed the announcement of political agreement between the DUP and Sinn Fein on the devolution of policing and justice.

He said: "The fact that political agreement has been reached on this difficult issue is to be commended. These past weeks have been frustrating for all of us as we have waited for political leaders to come to come to an accommodation. The fact that this has eventually been reached is to be welcomed.

"The greatest challenge of political leadership, in any time and in any place, is to act for the common good. We now look to the future as we welcome this significant moment in the politics of our community. We encourage our leaders to expend great energy and to find common purpose in successfully meeting the economic and social challenges that lie ahead.

"This breakthrough may release a logjam that has held back decision making in other areas of political life. If our politicians will seek accommodation for the common good in other decisions affecting everyday life they will find significant goodwill for their efforts from all sides."
