Brand New Andrew and Fair Trade Fred

AFTER an immensely popular tour of Scotland, Hopscotch Theatre Company's 'Brand New Andrew and Fair Trade will be arriving in Ballycastle to perform the show to the children of Northern Ireland.

Sponsored by the Coop Membership, the play follows two schoolchildren who travel the world trying to find a new school uniform. The writer, Raymond Burke explains : "The show is a bit of a double whammy inasmuch as it combines an anti-bullying message with ethical trading and brings into stark contrast the blind consumerism of designer clothes with the real plight of millions throughout the world. But don't let the serious message fool you, there are plenty of gags and singalongs to keep the audience's attention in an entertaining as well as in an educational way."

Throughout the performance the audience learns that relatively simple decisions on which clothes they wear effect not only themselves and their parents' bank balances but have drastic connotations for other children living thousands of miles away.

The play explores responsibility at both local and global levels from pestering parents for designer gear to bullying in school to the hardships endured by children in the sweatshops of the third world.

The learning outcome for the characters in the play is a realisation that there is much more to the person than the clothes they wear. And that when the individual is released from the expensive exterior of designer labels and brands that the responsible citizen of the future can break through to the surface.
