Brandywell greyhound racing is not a sport: Sports Minister

GREYHOUND trainers who have patronised Londonderry’s Brandywell for generations are not engaged in sport, according to the Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín.

The Minister has revealed Sports NI does not regard greyhound racing as a sport.

She made the revelation when asked how much her Department has provided in funding towards dog and horse racing.

“Sport NI is responsible for the distribution of funding for sport in the north of Ireland. Sport NI has provided no funding to horse racing or breeding in the last three years. Greyhound racing is not recognised as a sporting activity and it has therefore received no funding from Sport NI in the last three years,” she said.
