"We would like to thank Mr Paddy Mackey for attending our opening at this time on a Friday evening but we are hoping it will make a fitting start to his weekend," she said, adding: "It is a great pleasure for both the staff and the children to be able to escape to such bright and colourful surroundings and play in such a safe yet fun environment."

Chairman of the Board of Governors, Jim Robb said: "We were delighted to have received funding from the Awards For All Programme, our PTA Committee and through the Western Education and Library Board's Minor Works Programme for an area which is used daily by our pupils and which we hope will develop further in the years ahead.

Performing the official opening, Mr Mackey, said: "The delights of the outdoor are among the deepest, most passionate joys of children. Play is an active form of learning that unites the mind, body and spirit. Research has shown that playing outdoors is a form of exercise that promotes wellbeing and wholesome physical development."

"This new Outdoor Area will undoubtedly give the pupils who use it every opportunity to expand their imagination beyond the constraints of the classroom and I wish them all well."
