Break-in at family business

Alfie Greenaway, whose wife Vivienne runs Gem’s cafe in Union Street, told the ‘MAIL’ last Thursday morning: “When opening up this morning at about 7am I noticed the door was lying open about three inches. Somebody had stuck their boot in it, just below the lock.

“They’ve tried to get money out of the till but Vivienne takes it with her when she’s going home.

“They didn’t bother with the tip jar. They’ve gone through a few of the cupboards upstairs and tipped the contents all over the floor.”

Gem’s has been going strong in the town for four years, thanks to the hard work of the Greenaway family.

Alfie said: “It’s just annoying. It’s all our own money that goes into this business. We didn’t get any loans.

“This is a family business that gives four girls employment.

“The landlord has told me break-ins aren’t covered in the lease so we’re having to pay for all the repairs ourselves.”

Police were at the premises on Thursday morning to take fingerprints and gather evidence in the hope that the perpetrator or perpetrators could be brought to justice.

Police confirmed they are investigating a report of a burglary at a coffee shop in the Union Street area on the morning of Thursday, July 10.

The front door of the shop was forced and entry gained sometime overnight but at this stage it is not known if anything was taken. Enquiries are ongoing and officers would ask anyone with any information which may be of assistance to their investigation to contact police in Lurgan on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 218100714.
