Break-in at St Peter's temporary church

MONSIGNOR Aidan Hamill, has blamed high spirits before the bank holiday for vandalism at St Peter's temporary church.

The pre-fabricated building on North Street was broken into in the early hours of Monday, May 3, a door was pried open and damaged but nothing was stolen.

Monsignor Hamill said a fleece and a bottle of water were left in the building following the incident.

He said: "I think this was a case of petty vandalism, rather than an attempt to steal from the church. I think the prospect of a day off and the church being an easy target are the cause.

"We have looked at our security measures, and may make a few improvements, but if someone is determined they will no doubt find a way in."

The police have issued an appeal for information following the break-in.

Anyone who was in the area and who can assist police with their enquiries is asked to contact Lurgan police station on 0845 600 8000.

The temporary building was built to accommodate the faithful during the historic 19th century chapel's 3million renovation work.

Building work began last August and should be completed next spring.
