Break-ups costing£40b per year

DUP MP Gregory Campbell highlighted the massive (£40billion) annual cost of marital breakdown to society during a debate on family policy at Westminster last week.

In a contribution to the debate the East Londonderry representative mentioned “the severe problems that family breakdowns cause society.”

He said marital breakdown was costing in excess of £40 billion per year according to recently released statistics.

“Whatever investment the Government put in is worth while if it can address that fundamental problem, which will otherwise be with society for generations to come,” he commented.

Tory MP for South West Bedfordshire Andrew Selous said Mr Campbell was “absolutely right” and that the Relationships Foundation has put the annual cost of family breakdown at £42billion.
