BREAKING - One dead in A1 crash

ONE person is understood to have died following this morning’s two-car collision on the A1 near Banbridge.

Three others have been injured in the crash which took place on the main Belfast to Dublin road, which the Ambulance Service said happened when a car crossed the central reservation near the Castlewellan Road junction just before 10.50am.

John McPoland from the Ambulance Service said: “It would appear that one car had went across the central reservation and collided with a car coming in the other direction.

“We had been told, at that stage, that there were possibly three people ejected from the vehicles.

“So we immediately responded with four accident and emergency vehicles, one rapid response paramedic and three ambulance doctors.

“Since then we have taken four people to hospital.”

Two people were taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital, while another was taken to Daisy Hill in Newry and a fourth to Craigavon Area Hospital.

The A1 is closed in both directions from the Dromore Road, heading South, and the Rathfriland Road heading north. Traffic is being diverted through Banbridge town centre while the police and Fire Service deal with the incident.
