Brenda thrilled with‘Best Kept’ honour

Green-fingered gardening enthusiast Brenda Floodgate beat off stiff competition to win the Causeway Area Best Kept Garden Awards.

Brenda scooped first prize in her area before being named the overall winner of the Best Kept Garden 2015.

Brenda says:“I was delighted to hear that I had won first prize in the competition but it came as a great surprise to learn that I had won the overall prize in the Causeway area. The prize of a wheelbarrow and gardening tools will be of great use and I hope to see the competition rolled out again next year.

“I would like to thank the Housing Executive for the very enjoyable prize giving day where I met other fellow gardeners and exchanged tips.”

Judges Maria Murray and Nuala Mc Goldrick said: “We would like to thank all those who took part in this competition. The standard was quite impressive and it was very difficult to choose a winner.

“We were, however, particularly impressed by the use of colour and variety in the winning garden, where the selection and location of the plants and shrubs was evidence of the thought and attention to detail by the tenants. Well done to all.”

In the Coleraine area first prize went to Mr and Mrs Kelly from Castlerock, second prize to Olive Freeman in Coleraine, third place to Marion Moore in Castlerock and fourth place to Robert Mc Cook, in Coleraine .

Endeavour prizes were also awarded to two hard working gardeners for their hard work, Lexi Stewart from Limavady and Ronald Brown from Articlave Coleraine. The Housing Executive’s Area Manager for Causeway, Brendan Doherty, said: “Growing your own flowers is such an enjoyable part of life and it is wonderful when we see the interest that tenants have in their own patch. We would like to see it becoming an annual event.”
