Brief ban over insurance confusion

A 22-year-old man was banned from driving for seven days last Wednesday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

Philip McCready, Glanroy Avenue, Portadown, was also fined £200 for not having insurance on January 19 this year.

He was fined £100 for failing to produce his licence and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard that he was stopped on the Old Lurgan Road, Portadown, and asked to produce his licence and insurance.

Police checks on January 26 revealed he had not produced them.

A solicitor representing the defendant said there were no points on his licence.

He explained that he had insurance from a previous vehicle which he had transferred to this vehicle.

The solicitor said that McCready did not get correspondence from his insurance company saying his policy was cancelled because it had gone to his landlord who was away.

He added that his client was a probationary driver and if he got six points his licence would be revoked and asked the court for a short disqualification instead.
