Bright morning in Tonagh

CHILDREN and staff at Tonagh Primary School recently took part in a ‘Be Bright Be Seen’ day, organised by charity Sustrans as part of the Bike It Project.

Sustrans is working with schools in Lisburn to provide children with the skills and information necessary to allow them to take to two wheels for the journey to school on a regular basis.

Children at the school stepped up to the challenge of making themselves and their bikes as bright as possible so that they would be seen and safe on their journey to and from school, especially important on darker Autumn mornings. Prizes were given for some of the best dressed bikes and children from each class were ‘spotted’ to receive certificates for brightest outfit, although there had been a ‘brilliant’ number of children taking part who had put in lots of effort.

Pamela Grove-White from Sustrans, said: “Walking and cycling to school is a great way for our children to get the exercise they need every day to keep healthy, and research shows it allows them to become better students in the classroom. And let’s not forget it’s fun, too”

Sustrans works with schools in Northern Ireland thanks to funding from the Department for Regional Development, the Public Health Agency, Active Belfast and local councils.
