Brighter Bushmills project

Cllr Hunter went on to say that Helene Byrne and Louie Winward have worked their magic transforming the vast majority of the derelict properties in the Bushmills Village to what she would call works of art.

“The two ladies have put in an enormous amount of time and effort transforming these buildings from their rundown and derelict appearance to an attraction in their own right. The number of people contacting me about the great improvement this has made to Bushmills is fantastic,” she said.

Cllr. Hunter went on: “I know the ladies would be the first to acknowledge the tremendous help and assistance they have received in the making of these panels.

“The project is a joint Bushmills Trust and Village Forum promotion with administrative help from Moyle District Council and the National Trust, while the main monies came through a grant from The Rural Development Programme with support from the Housing Executive and contributions from some of the derelict property owners.

The concept and indeed the content of the panels were developed through workshops involving the local community and specifically the young people of Bushmills. Helene and Louie with this support were able to produce work that is literally outstanding.

“The photographs that adorn the panels were all set up and taken locally. A number of individuals and businesses also assisted tremendously in ensuring this projects success, giving of their time, premises, goods and materials freely, it is a great credit to all concerned.

“Most of the panels tell a story about a part of the history of the building they are inserted into and I know also that Helene and Louie have many stories to tell regarding each panel from concept to completion.”

Cllr Hunter concluded by saying. “On behalf of Moyle District Council and as a resident of the area I would like to add my personal thanks and appreciation to all concerned.”
