Bringing on the IT challenge

PUPILS from Larne Grammar School have been given an insight into the potential career paths they could follow if they choose to study IT at university or college.

The Bring IT On road show arrived at the University of Ulster recently for the second of four planned regional events taking place this year.

The event, organised by Momentum, the ICT Federation for Northern Ireland, in collaboration with e-skills UK, the Sector Skills Council for Business and Information Technology, aims to provide young people with information about the skills requirements and career opportunities with the IT sector in Northern Ireland.

Around 200 pupils from eight schools across Northern Ireland attended the event, which was hosted by the University of Ulster’s School of Computing and Mathematics.

Head of School Dr Paul Hanna, along with senior lecturers Dr Stephen Hagan and Dr Ian McChesney, presented a lively session that included videos and interactive ICT related activities, which encouraged the pupils to work in teams and compete for prizes.

ICT ambassadors from companies such as Allstate, Citi, Consilium, and Total Mobile interacted with the pupils during the event and provided information about their companies, their career paths and the job roles and opportunities available within their organisations and the ICT industry in general.

Future Bring IT On events will take place at Belfast Metropolitan College’s new Titanic Quarter campus and the University of Ulster’s Magee campus in Londonderry.
