British Legion holds its AGM

David Montgomery retired after four successful years as chairman, Andrew McGugan being voted in as current chairman.

David thanked everyone for their assistance throughout his time in office.

Matt Clyde retired as vice chairman after many many years faithful service in this post. His replacement is Kenny Mc Killop who is also the new standard bearer.

Ida McIntyre continues as treasurer as does Helen Heaney as Poppy Appeal organiser, secretary Mrs Glenda Rodgers McCormick.

It was a busy year with a big breakfast, cream teas, barbecues, motorcycle tours, also members competing in a half marathon in Belfast. Miss J Heaney and Mr R Brogan taking a lead supported by many members and their wives. All proceeds going towards the Poppy Appeal.

President Jim Fairburn gave an account of the year’s work mentioning that Colonel Neil Salisbury was now on the board of trustees in London, the secretary Mrs Glenda Rodgers Mc Cormick spoke of branch activities.

Welfare an important aspect of Legion work is in the very capable hands of Mrs Joan Mc Killop. Maintaining contact with widows and widowers through a gift and visit at Christmas time is a social must.

The Remembrance Festival concert organised by Mr L Heaney was held in Dunluce School. The Remembrance service on Sunday morning 10th November was very well attended. WWI roll of honour was read by Mr L Heaney, WW11 roll by Glenda Rodgers Mc Cormick, master Jack Mc Cullough sounded reveille and last post.

At close of proceedings the parade reformed and led by Ballintoy Accordion bBand paraded to Dunluce Parish Church under direction of parade commander David Culbertson. The service was conducted by Rev. Graham, lessons read by Mr Bartlett and Mr Wilmont. The deputy Lord Lieutenant Mrs Cole took the salute assisted by Mr Fairbairn.

On Monday 11th November a short act of Remembrance was held at the Bushmills war memorial. Mr Jim Fairbairn sounded reveille and Andew McGugan gave the exhortation. A two minute silence was observer. Quite a number of local people gathered for this small but significant act of remembrance for those who gave all.
