Brothers to cross Ireland ...by kayak!

FOUR students are taking on the challenge of kayaking across Ireland to raise money for The Alzheimer's Societies of both the UK and Ireland.

The team collectively known as 'The Morphs' is composed of two sets of brothers from related families, who come from Bushmills and Ballycastle.

Charlie (21) and Sandy Cole (19), Shane (20) and Paddy Trail, 18 are taking on the challenge to give back to a charity that is close to their hearts.

Their grandfather was recently diganosed with Dementia with Lewy Bodies. This illness is similar to Alzheimer's but also includes aspects of Parkinson's disease which affect the body's mobility.

Thanks to research financed by the Alzheimer's Society, there are now medicines that can slow down the progress of this disease and which have afforded the boys some invaluable extra time with their grandfather.

'The Morphs' mission is to kayak the 550 miles between Coleraine and Waterford.

At 9am on June 21 there will be a launch party in Coleraine after which, clad in Morph suits, the team will kayak up the River Bann to Lough Neagh and then on to Lough Erne following the old Ulster Canal.

Next they will journey via the Erne Navigation System before joining the River Shannon, The Grand Canal and their final destination, Waterford, on The River Barrow.

As far as the team are aware, this is the first time this challenge has been attempted. 'The Morphs' hope to achieve this journey, unaided, within a month, and any water side support would be very welcome!
