“As a DUP Assembly candidate I fully share my party’s desire to see an increase in the maximum period imprisonment for offences involving violence or neglect directed against the elderly or vulnerable,” he said, “Crimes carried out against older people in our society should not be taken lightly.

“As one who has served as an elected representative for a number of years and who has worked with many people I fully recognise how crimes against the elderly or vulnerable have scarred our community.

“I am infuriated when I learn of an attack on an elderly or vulnerable person and this feeling is shared by the vast majority in the community.

“A very strong desire exists broadly in our society for more to be done to clamp down and do all that is possible to eliminate such despicable crimes.”

Mr Buckley has said ensuring our older people have the support they need is a priority for the DUP and needs a working Assembly to protect.

Mr Buckley has also highlighted his concerns regarding rural crime. “Rural crime is a scourge on our rural communities which must be strongly dealt with,” he continued.

“The agricultural industry is working hard to maintain farms and deal with the many challenges that are currently being faced and does not need the added burden of those who would seek to make life more difficult.”
